Glen Powell reveals the brutal advice Tom Cruise gave him for ‘The Running Man’

While preparing for his role in The Running Man, Glen Powell revealed that he turned to his mentor, Tom Cruise, for tips on executing certain stunts which led to extremely honest feedback from the Hollywood A-lister.

During his appearance at CinemaCon, Powell shared Cruise’s advice on perfecting his running style, something that the actor is well-known for in the Mission: Impossible franchise. Powell said that he was advised to “film yourself running as soon as possible. You don’t look as cool as you think you do.”

Edgar Wright directed The Running Man. The filmmaker joined Powell and fellow cast members Josh Brolin and Colman Domingo to discuss their upcoming action thriller at CinemaCon. The film is described as set in an oppressive future where the government controls the media. It follows Ben Richards as he volunteers to take part in a game show where the contestants are hunted by professional killers.

At CinemaCon, Powell shared how his love for cinema was deepened by watching Cruise’s work, saying, “He’s a guy that doesn’t hide his excitement about what this means, you know, the theatrical experience, and working hard and investing and putting your body on the line to entertain audiences.”

Wright also shared a similar sentiment when discussing his love for the medium, saying, “As a director, I’m an audience member first and foremost. To make films you have to be the audience as well. What I think as a filmmaker, is you are always chasing that electric feeling that you had watching a film [in a theater with an audience.] You remember the imprint in your brain when you saw that film with a packed house.”

Brolin also recalled the “profound impact” of his past cinema-going experiences, adding, “It’s a personal experience and when the lights go down, you are available to the power of story. I don’t think anything can replace that.”

The Running Man is set for release on November 7th, 2025.
