Fontaines DC drummer Tom Coll co-founds new label Inis Records

Tom Coll, the drummer from acclaimed Irish rock band Fontaines DC, has launched a new independent label and record store.

Coll co-founded Inis Records alongside Ken Allen of Faction Records and Michael Roe, drummer of math-rock band Adebisi Shank and co-founder of the influential Richter Collective label.

The label will dedicate itself to releasing landmark reissues, hidden gems, and new music from up-and-coming Irish acts. Notably, Inis Records takes its name from the Irish word for island or ilse.

The trio will also open a shop that will only stock Irish records in an effort to bring more Irish music into the mainstream, and offer a way in to the industry for musicians who don’t have their own distribution.

“Inis Records is about providing an independent label infrastructure in Ireland, giving Irish music a platform to grow, and create unique physical music for Irish artists,” Coll said in a press statement.

He added, “We want to create truly special vinyl runs, reissue some older gems, and support the next wave of Irish music. Ireland needs a stronger independent music infrastructure and our goal with Inis is to achieve that.”

Roe added, “Ireland has such a rich history of amazing artists and labels. Over the last 30 years though, we have relied heavily on infrastructure from outside the country.”

Therefore, Inis Records aims to “build a stronger independent music infrastructure here, giving a generation of new artists and labels the support they need to grow their businesses in Ireland, while reaching audiences internationally.”

The label’s first pre-order offering is a reissue of 1989’s Against Nature, the out-of-print album by art-rockers Fatima Mansions.

They already have several exciting manouvers set in stone, including a traditional music compilation assembled by Coll to come later this year, as well as a showband compilation curated by Charles Hendy of the Mary Wallopers.

Earlier this summer, it was also announced that Coll and Fontaines DC bandmate have produced the forthcoming album from Parisian band Film Noir.
