More details emerge about Helena Bonham-Carter’s exit from ‘The White Lotus’

After Helena Bonham-Carter exited series four of The White Lotus, more details have emerged about the character she was due to play and her departure.

Last month, it was confirmed that the British actor would no longer be part of the series after only a week of production, which is currently filming in France, with the role set to be rewritten and recast.

At the time, an HBO spokesperson said, “With filming just underway on Season 4 of The White Lotus, it had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set.”

Subsequently, Laura Dern was announced as a new member of the cast, filling the void left behind by Bonham-Carter’s exit.

According to a new report from Variety, Bonham-Carter was due to play “a washed-out star who is chasing a comeback” at Cannes Film Festival, which is where season four of The White Lotus is set.

However, the report claims that creative differences ensued between showrunner Mike White and Bonham-Carter, with White demanding “a boisterous performance” from the actor.

Although Dern is due to play a different character in the show, it is said that her role “will fill a similar place within the ensemble”.

Other fascinating insights from the report include the mammoth budget for the upcoming season, which is claimed to stand at around $120 million.

In addition to Dern, the ensemble features Steve Coogan, Ari Graynor, Alexander Ludgwid, Chloe Bennet, Caleb Jonte Edwards, and Dylan Ennis.

While Cannes is set to be central to the plot of season four, filming will also take place in Paris to allow for the region to make the most of the tourist season this summer.

Hotels featured in the new season include Airelles Château de la Messardière in Saint-Tropez as the White Lotus du Cap and the Hôtel Martine as the White Lotus Cannes.
