Helena Bonham Carter leaves ‘The White Lotus’, role to be rewritten and recast

Helena Bonham Carter could take only one week of production on The White Lotus set before calling it quits.

The two-time Oscar nominee has departed the popular television series due to “creative differences”, Deadline reports.

The news came from a HBO spokesperson, who shared, “With filming just underway on Season 4 of The White Lotus, it had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set.”

The official statement went on to add, “The role has subsequently been rethought, is being rewritten and will be recast in the coming weeks. HBO, the producers and Mike White are saddened that they won’t get to work with her, but remain ardent fans and very much hope to work with the legendary actress on another project soon.”

This is a huge surprise, given that the Harry Potter actor was the first actor White and his team pursued for involvement in the fourth season. Her role was meant to be central to the entire plot of the season.

Subsequently, the schedule for filming has been adjusted to focus primarily on the rest of the cast for now, which gives White time to do rewrites and recast a new actor to fill the role.

So far, the rest of the cast, which includes Steve Coogan, Ari Graynor, Alexander Ludgwid, Chloe Bennet, Caleb Jonte Edwards, Dylan Ennis, and more, are still on board.

This season, the upper-class holiday-makers will be depicted along the Côte d’Azur. Filming will also take place in Paris. Hotels featured in the new season include Airelles Château de la Messardière in Saint-Tropez as the White Lotus du Cap and the Hôtel Martinez as the White Lotus Cannes.

HBO also recently revealed, “The fourth season will follow a new group of White Lotus hotel guests and employees over the span of a week, taking place during the Cannes Film Festival.”
