Christopher Nolan is hoping Quentin Tarantino “won’t stay true” to retirement plan
Christopher Nolan has urged Quentin Tarantino to walk back his plans to retire from directing.
Tarantino, who has not directed a film since Once Upon A Time in Hollywood in 2019, has long insisted that he will retire after making his tenth movie.
As it stands, Tarantino has made nine films. His final movie was due to be The Movie Critic, which he subsequently cancelled in 2024.
Now, Nolan, whose 13th film, The Odyssey, arrives in cinemas on July 17th, has shared his hopes that Tarantino changes his stance.
He told The Telegraph, “I think it’s dangerous to look at it that specifically. I mean, Quentin has his reasons, and I respect those enormously. But I’m hoping that he won’t stay true to them.”
Thankfully, Nolan doesn’t have a similar mindset, adding, “I view every film that I do as the last I’ll ever make, and one day I will be right. So every time I want to put everything into the project at hand. I’m never thinking, ‘Well, I’ll save this for the next one.’”
The director continued, “I’m never thinking, ‘Well, I’ll save this for the next one’. I don’t ever want to think like that. I want each movie to be everything.”
There is a strong mutual respect between the two directors, with Tarantino previously saying of his peer in 2014, “Christopher Nolan would be just as good of a filmmaker as he is, just as a potent filmmaker as he is if he was making movies in 1975. Or, if he was making movies in 1965. I’d like to see Chris Nolan’s version of The Battle of Bulge. That would be fucking awesome.”
For now, Tarantino is focused on bringing his first theatre production, The Popinjay Cavelier, to the West End next year rather than directing another film.
Earlier this year, the synopsis was revealed, which reads, “Set in 1830s Europe, The Popinjay Cavalier is a rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise inspired by the grand swashbuckling epics of stage and screen.”
It continues, “A sweeping celebration of theatre and its heightened romance, told with Tarantino’s signature style and unmistakable wit.”
As his attention remains elsewhere, it remains uncertain when Tarantino will decide to step back into the director’s chair for the final time.
