Quentin Tarantino confirms details of his first West End play, ‘The Popinjay Cavalier’
Director Quentin Tarantino has confirmed details of his highly-anticipated West End play, The Popinjay Cavelier.
Tarantino has partnered with Sonia Friedman Productions and Sony Pictures Entertainment for the upcoming project, which is scheduled to arrive in London’s glamorous West End in early 2027.
The official synopsis for the play reads, “Set in 1830s Europe, The Popinjay Cavalier is a rambunctious comedy of deception and disguise inspired by the grand swashbuckling epics of stage and screen.”
It continues, “A sweeping celebration of theatre and its heightened romance, told with Tarantino’s signature style and unmistakable wit.”
Last August, Tarantino spoke about the project during an appearance on The Church of Tarantino podcast, stating, “The play is all written, it is absolutely the next thing that I’m going to [do] and we will start the ball rolling on it in January.”
He also shared his ambition for a long, fruitful theatrical run, adding, “I’m preparing for it to be a success. If it is a flop, then I will be done very quickly.”
At this stage, a specific London theatre has not yet been confirmed to host The Poinjay Cavelier, nor has any of the cast been confirmed. However, the Daily Mail did recently report he’s in talks with “big Hollywood stars to appear in the show”.
Tarantino’s decision to create a West End play comes following his vow to only direct one more film. Notably, his last movie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, arrived in 2019, and he’s yet to get back in the director’s chair since.
He did have plans to make a film called The Movie Critic, but ultimately chose against bringing his vision to the big screen.
A spin-off to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, titled The Adventures of Cliff Booth, starring Brad Pitt, will arrive later this year on Netflix. However, despite Tarantino penning the screenplay, the movie is directed by David Fincher.
