Cary Elwes shares touching Rob Reiner tribute on late director’s birthday
Cary Elwes has shared a touching tribute to Rob Reiner in celebration of what would have been the late director’s 79th birthday.
The Princess Bride actor took to Instagram on March 6th to publicly share his grief for his old colleague. Elwes posted a photo of himself with Reiner alongside a cover of ‘Storybook Love’, the Oscar-nominated theme song from the fantasy movie.
The caption began, “Today would have been your 79th birthday. Still hard to believe you’re gone.”
Elwes then wrote succintly, “Missing you so much,” before signing off with a sword emoji and a broken heart emoji.
Rob and his wife, Michele Reiner, passed away on December 14th after sustaining “multiple sharp force injuries” at their home in Brentwood, California. The couple had been married since 1989.
Their 32-year-old son, Nick, was later arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances. In February, he pleaded not guilty to these charges; he is set to reappear in court on April 29th.
Two weeks after Rob and Michele’s passing, Elwes penned a moving tribute to the late couple, whom he deemed a “great team”.
In his original tribute, the actor reminisced, “From that very first meeting, I fell in love with [Rob]. I was already a fan of his work so meeting him in person was a dream come true. As we began spending more time together I knew this was someone I wanted in my life.”
He turned his attention to Rob’s character: “This was a man who felt deeply. Whose heart was filled with love and compassion,” Elwes wrote. “He wasn’t impressed by how much money you had or if you had a privileged upbringing. He just wanted to know if you were a ‘good guy.’”
Following the tragedy, Rob and Michele’s two other children, Jake and Romy, issued a statement which began: “Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day.”
The statement, “The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.”
