Callum Turner new favourite in James Bond race, new reports suggest
English actor Callum Turner is the new favourite in the race to find the new James Bond, the latest reports suggest.
The next instalment of the 007 series stalled for several years, but began to pick up pace in February after Amazon MGM Studios gained control following lengthy negotiations with the previous owners, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson.
Their family has owned the rights since their father, Albert R. Broccoli, brought the first movie to the screen in 1962. Now, Dune director Denis Villeneuve has been confirmed to helm the next movie. A fresh face to take the titular role is needed.
According to The Telegraph, betting organisation William Hill recently cut its odds on Turner getting the part from 5/2 to 7/4. No reason was given for the change.
This now puts Turner ahead of rivals such as Henry Cavill, Theo James and Harris Dickinson. It appears that Bullet Train actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been the speculated frontrunner, though Turner is edging closer to Taylor-Johnson with this new development.
One piece of evidence that beady-eyed Bonds fans noticed recently was Turner’s vacation spot with fiancée Dua Lipa. They recently attended the GoldenEye resort in Jamaica, which was once the estate of Bond author Ian Fleming.
Despite the role being one of the most sought-after in the industry, some actors have distanced themselves from the prospect of taking the torch from Daniel Craig. For example, when Kingsman actor Taron Egerton was asked whether he’ll be putting himself forward, he stated, “I don’t think I’m a good choice for it. I think I’m too messy for that.”
Taking himself off the provisional list once and for all, the Rocketman actor said, “James Bond is quite an undertaking and I think, one, as far as I’m aware, nobody’s asking me to do it. But also, it’s possibly not quite the thing that would make me happiest. I do think it’s a big old undertaking, it kind of consumes your life, a role like that.”
It was recently reported that Euphoria star Sydney Sweeney is in with the chance of starring in the new movie, after Amazon owner Jeff Bezos pushed her forward. However, she has remained coy when asked about the rumours.
