Taron Egerton rubbishes James Bond speculation: “It would be wasted on me”
Despite acing a similar role in the Kingsman films, Taron Egerton doesn’t believe he’s the right fit to play James Bond.
In a new interview with Collider, the actor revealed that he doesn’t see himself playing the world-renowned character, given new life in Amazon’s new iteration of the franchise.
Egerton was asked in the new interview whether he’d be interested in putting his name forward for the role. In response, he said: “No. And I don’t think I’m a good choice for it. I think I’m too messy for that.”
The Welsh actor went on to praise the character, “particularly Daniel Craig’s tenure”, before adding, “But I think I wouldn’t be good at it, and I think there’s so many cool, younger actors who would be great for it. I think it would be wasted on me, probably.”
The 35-year-old admitted that at a certain point, he may want to consider taking on a larger role like Bond. Recently, he has taken on the role of an arson investigator in the 2025 TV series Smoke. The first episode aired in June on Apple TV+.
Egerton also added, “I think I’m a period in my life where, as you say, I’ve been probably following the things that speak to me on a creative level a little bit more, but, you know, I’m sure I won’t feel that way forever.”
Taking himself off the provisional list once and for all, the Rocketman actor said, “James Bond is quite an undertaking and I think, one, as far as I’m aware, nobody’s asking me to do it. But also, it’s possibly not quite the thing that would make me happiest. I do think it’s a big old undertaking, it kind of consumes your life, a role like that.”
While the next instalment of the 007 series stalled for several years, it began to pick up pace in February after Amazon MGM Studios gained control following lengthy negotiations with the previous owners, Barbara Broccoli and Michael G Wilson. Their family has owned the rights since their father, Albert R. Broccoli, brought the first movie to the screen in 1962. Now, Dune director Denis Villeneuve has been confirmed to helm the next movie.
Egerton’s next project is an adaptation of Jordan Harper’s propulsive, gritty novel, She Rides Shotgun, which follows Nate who must protect his estranged 11-year-old daughter after being released from prison. It will hit cinemas on August 1st.
