Bruce Springsteen, John Fogerty, Smokey Robinson and Tom Morello jam at American Music Honors
The annual American Music Honors, organised by the Bruce Springsteen Archives & Centre, this year honoured Smokey Robinson, John Fogerty, Emmylou Harris, Tom Morello, and Joe Ely. All bar Ely were in attendance and performed classic songs for a modest crowd on the night.
The event, which took place on Saturday, April 28th, was staged in front of 714 people on an unsuspecting college campus. As no television version is planned, fan footage is all that will come from the monumental occasion.
Even better, the musicians had aid throughout the night. Other names on stage included Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul, Bruce Springsteen, and surprise guests Jackson Browne, Nils Lofgren, Nora Guthrie, and Darlene Love.
Former NBC News anchor Brian Williams was the host for the evening, often passing to Springsteen to personally deliver speeches.
Springsteen performed the Creedence classics ‘Bad Moon Rising’, ‘Proud Mary’ and ‘Fortunate Son’ with Fogerty. He didn’t stop there, then covering Joe Ely’s ‘All Just to Get to You’. After, he teamed up with Jackson Browne for ‘Take It Easy’, Smokey Robinson for ‘Going to a Go-Go’, and Tom Morello for a double hit ‘The Ghost of Tom Joad’ and ‘Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out’.
The show finished with a bang, with all the big names in attendance coming together for the small crowd. The closing song was none other than Woody Guthrie’s classic, ‘This Land Is Your Land’, which was last performed live in 2013.
Springsteen will star in the upcoming biopic Deliver Me from Nowhere. Jeremy Allen White will play a younger version of the star in the film, which will hit screens later this year and has the seal of approval from ‘The Boss’. It will detail the story behind the musician’s seminal album, Nebraska, released in 1982.
