Bruce Springsteen attacks Donald Trump again during Lille concert
Bruce Springsteen has refused to back down in his ongoing feud with President Donald Trump, again attacking the politician during his most recent concert in Lille on May 24th.
Springsteen began his European tour in Manchester at the Co-op Live on May 14th and used his show to condemn the Trump administration. Before playing ‘My City of Ruins’, he delivered an anti-Trump monologue, which led to a fiery response from the US president, but Springsteen is continuing to spread the same message at every show.
In an almost word-for-word identical speech to Manchester, Springsteen said to those in attendance for his concert at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy, “I’ve always tried to be a good ambassador for America, I’ve spent my life singing about where we have succeeded and where we’ve come short in living up to our civic ideals and our dreams. Things are happening right now that are altering the very nature of our country’s democracy and they’re simply too important to ignore.”
“So, first let me thank you for indulging me. In America, in my home, they are persecuting people for using their right to free speech and voicing their dissent,” he continued.
He added to a rapturous reception: “This is happening now and America’s richest men are taking satisfaction in abandoning the world’s poorest children to sickness and death. This is happening now. In my country, they’re taking sadistic pleasure in the pain they inflict on the loyal American workers.”
Again, Springsteen also accused the United States of “abandoning our great allies and siding with dictators against those struggling for their freedom”.
Later in his speech, Springsteen said from the heart, “The America that I sung to you about for 50 years is real, and regardless of its many faults, it’s a great country with great people and we will survive this moment.”
When Springsteen addressed the crowd, the words from his speech were translated into French on a screen so that non-English speakers could understand.
Springsteen has consistently railed against Trump at every opportunity during his tour, which is set to return to the UK next month for two shows at Liverpool FC’s Anfield Stadium.
After footage from his opening tour show in Manchester surfaced, Trump previously wrote on Truth Social, “Never liked him, never liked his music, or his Radical Left Politics and, importantly, he’s not a talented guy — Just a pushy, obnoxious JERK”.
He also said Springsteen is as “dumb as a rock” for his support of President Joe Biden while he was in office before seemingly threatening the singer, adding, “This dried out “prune” of a rocker (his skin is all atrophied!) ought to KEEP HIS MOUTH SHUT until he gets back into the Country, that’s just “standard fare.” Then we’ll all see how it goes for him!”
A few days later, after Springsteen criticised him again at another Manchester concert, Trump announced plans to launch a “major investigation” into the singer’s support of the Democratic Party at the last election. Springsteen performed at two rallies in swing states last October.
The president also shared doctored footage of him hitting a golf ball, which was edited to hit Springsteen while performing on stage, causing him to fall over.
Springsteen’s tour is set to continue with a second show at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy in Lille on May 27th.
