‘The Black Parade’ 20 years on: The sad concept behind the album explained

There are some songs which are so heavily laced in nostalgia we can’t help but sing along the moment they’re played. My Chemical Romance are responsible for a number of these.

We all remember where we were the moment we heard those piano keys for the first time. G F# B E D, the opening five notes, played in isolation and setting the stage for the iconic song ‘Welcome To The Black Parade’. Of course, those isolated notes feel a long way from home when you get to the end of the track, which erupts into a haphazard mess of drum fills, screaming vocals and distorted guitars.

The song is considered a classic, both in isolation and as part of a broader picture when you consider the album it’s attached to. The Black Parade is one of My Chemical Romance’s most pivotal pieces of work and is also widely considered one of the most important emo albums ever to be created.

Recently, the band announced they would be playing a couple of nights at Wembley on July 10th and 11th, 2026. The stadium shows represent two things: the first is that the band are in high demand and so likely won’t have much trouble filling out the iconic London venue. The second is the magnitude of the gig, as unlike any other My Chemical Romance show, this one will mark 20 years of The Black Parade, celebrating one of their most critically acclaimed and commercially successful records.

The album isn’t just a great piece of music that slots itself into the emo canon; it’s also a deep and profoundly sad concept album that follows the struggling story of The Patient, a man dying of cancer. ‘Welcome To The Black Parade’ was the first single created for the record, which set out its story.

Gerard Way discussed the song’s meaning and how it impacted the rest of the album. When he had the idea for the record to be about a man dying of cancer, Way started writing about the different ways death could present itself. He eventually settled on death taking the form of the individual’s most powerful memory, and in the case of The Patient, that memory was going to a parade with his father when he was younger.

Throughout the song and all of the different tones that are executed throughout, The Patient is essentially lying in a hospital bed dying, and his final journey to death is what makes up the album The Black Parade. It’s an incredibly heavy and complicated concept album, but the whole thing works very well, and it has captured the hearts and minds of many who have continued listening to this day.

Why has this album, with its sad concept and complicated storyline, become such a classic in the grand scheme of things? Well, there are a few reasons. Some of the most obvious are the fact that the music is great, the writing is exceptional and it’s not too often people come across a well thought out and executed concept album. However, one of the other reasons this album works so well is because of how effectively it resonates with those who listen. While the album is incredibly theatrical, the band were going through a very hard time when writing it. Through the pretence of fiction, they were able to be incredibly honest and vulnerable on this record. Despite being a concept album that revolves around a made-up story, The Black Parade is probably one of My Chemical Romance’s most honest records to date. You just have to do some digging.

Gerard Way confessed as much when he spoke about the album, admitting that a lot of the band’s vulnerabilities are laid bare on there. “It wasn’t the happiest times of our lives,” he said, “We were questioning our mortality. I think it’s a very human record underneath the bombast and the theatrics. The sound is very large and grand but it’s a very mortal record. It’s an interesting duality because there are a lot of lyrics that examine ourselves – not just as a band but as human beings.”

He continued, “We were examining each other, and hopefully it will encourage listeners to examine themselves. We were putting our lives under a microscope. We wanted listeners to put their own lives under the microscope, too.”

All of these elements come together to create what many consider to be a classic album, and when you look at the separate elements of the record, it’s easy to understand why. When My Chemical Romance take to the stage at Wembley, one thing is guaranteed: they will play music that has and continues to touch the hearts of all those listening.
