Björk previews new concert film focused on climate change
During a recent appearance at Climate Week in New York City, Icelandic music icon Björk shared a preview of an upcoming concert film entitled Cornucopia. The ‘Army of Me’ singer has directed the film herself, and it is currently in the latter stages of post-production, though an official release date has not yet been revealed.
The film was created with footage from the Lisbon leg of Björk’s recent ‘Cornucopia’ world tour. However, it is said to place a large focus on the songwriter’s continued climate and environmental activism. In recent months, the singer also shared a track created alongside Rosalía that aimed to raise awareness of the dangers of open-pen salmon farming—an issue that plagues her home nation of Iceland.
In addition to previewing the Cornucopia film at Climate Week, the musician also shared a statement on the importance of tackling climate change. In her own distinctive fashion, the musician shared this rallying statement in the form of a poem, which is in keeping with her endless desire for artistic expression even in the face of political and social struggles.
“It is an emergency,” the statement, which was shared to Deadline, begins. In order to survive as a species, we need to define our utopia. The Paris climate accord is a modern utopia impossible to imagine, but overcoming our environmental challenges is the only way we can survive.” The Paris Climate Treaty was signed in 2016 but has been criticised by certain activists for not going far enough to tackle the crisis.
Björk continued, “We have to imagine something that doesn’t exist, carve intentionally into the future and demand space for hope, weave a matriarchal dome. Let’s imagine a world where nature and technology collaborate and make a song about its musical mockup then move into it.”
Concluding her definitive statement on the matter, Björk pleaded, “Let’s write music for our destination, in mythologies around the world after a disaster one captures the spirit with a flute and starts anew, carved out of the first fauna, we arrive on a new island with mutant species unknown hybrids of birds and plants, our past is on loop, turn it off, let ́s be intentional about the light, imagine a future be in it.”
Cornucopia, which reportedly features a guest speech from Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, is set to be produced by Snowstorm, S101, Level Forward and Foobar, and further details surrounding its widespread release will reportedly be revealed by the end of the year.
