Baftas 2024: Margot Robbie calls Emerald Fennell a “genius”

The Baftas are officially underway, with the industry’s biggest stars taking to the red carpet in anticipation of the ceremony.

Australian actor Margot Robbie is up for two awards, ‘Best Actress in a Leading Role’ for Greta Gerwig’s Barbie and ‘Outstanding British Film’ for Emerald Fennel’s Saltburn, which she co-produced.

Robbie, who received her Hollywood breakthrough in 2013’s The Wolf of Wall Street, earned significant praise for her performance as the titular plastic doll in Barbie last year. However, on the Baftas red carpet, she took the time to discuss Saltburn. The film caused significant buzz upon its release due to several controversial erotic scenes.

Robbie called Saltburn and its cast’s recognition at the Baftas “unbelievable” before adding, “They’re so amazing, and they’re getting the nods tonight, which is so exciting.”

She continued, “It’s a brilliant film, and Emerald’s just a genius.” Noting that Fennell, as well as directing Saltburn, played Midge in Barbie, Robbie said, “Talk about a multi-hyphenate; she literally can do anything.”

“I’m so happy that movie has connected with people – in a totally different way to Barbie, but still a very communal and strong reaction, which has been fun,” Robbie said.

Saltburn is nominated for five Baftas, including ‘Best Actor in a Leading Role’ for Barry Keoghan and ‘Best Actress in a Supporting Role’ for Rosamund Pike.
