Angelina Jolie says she “wouldn’t be an actress today” due to Hollywood
Angelina Jolie has claimed Hollywood is “not a healthy place” and she wouldn’t begin an acting career in 2023 for this reason.
In recent years, Jolie has taken a step back from acting and while she still occasionally dips her toes into the water, it’s no longer her focus. Instead, she prefers to spend time with her family and won’t commit to a project if it requires a lengthy shoot which will separate Jolie from her children.
During a new interview with The Wall Street Journal, Jolie explained her issues with the industry and how growing up in Hollywood was damaging. She told the publication: “I wouldn’t be an actress today. When I was starting out, it wasn’t as much of an expectation to be as public, to share so much.”
Jolie also revealed she doesn’t read any press speculation about her life, but noted that she’s “been around so long, and there’s been everything said.”
Having grown up with parents who worked as actors, Jolie was thrust into Hollywood at an early age but didn’t allow herself to become a slave to the machine. The actor claimed she “was never very impressed with it [Hollywood],” and also stated, “I never bought into it as significant or important.”
She continued: “I grew up in quite a shallow place. Of all the places in the world, Hollywood is not a healthy place. So you seek authenticity.”
Earlier this year, Jolie discussed her decision to disappear from Hollywood with Vogue. “We had a lot of healing to do. We’re still finding our footing,” she said of her mental health. Jolie also admitted often being a “bit down these days,” adding, “I don’t feel like I’ve been myself for a decade, in a way. Which I don’t want to get into.”
