Angelina Jolie rules out biopic on her life
Angelina Jolie has played a wide variety of characters throughout her career. In her latest project, she is starring as the opera singer Maria Callas in Pablo Larrain’s new biopic. However, the actor has ruled out the possibility of a biopic about her own life.
According to the film’s official synopsis, Maria follows the story of Callas during her final days in 1970s Paris. The movie is reimagined using central aspects of the true story of Callas’ life, which also features Pierfrancesco Favino, Alba Rohrwacher and Haluk Bilginer.
Nevertheless, Jolie doesn’t want her life to be beamed onto the big screen. The Hollywood star told The Sunday Times: “That gets the most insane question award. When you’re a public person and you’re playing [someone else].”
She continued: “You’re conscious of how you would hate for somebody to interpret your life or think they understand your life, so we tried to be thoughtful [with Maria]. Let’s hope there isn’t one about my life.”
After her performance in Maria, Jolie is said to be in the running for an Academy Award nomination. The film centres around the singer’s final days as she reflects on her memories and tumultuous career. The actor even had to learn opera for the role in order to record live vocals on set.
Jolie has explained how learning to sing in this way helped her process difficult feelings and feelings in her personal life, as it “brings up certain emotions that you may have not wanted to confront, and there’s no way to sing at your full voice and your full emotion without confronting your feelings and your limitations.”
She continued: “I walked into room with the piano, and somebody said, ‘OK, let’s see where you’re at.’ And I got really emotional. I took a big deep breath, and I let out a sound, and I started crying. I think we all don’t realize how much we hold inside our bodies, and how much we carry and how much that affects our sound and our voice and our ability to make sound. I’ve been holding a lot for a long time, and that beginning and that sound, and then when that sound would eventually come, it was the best therapy I’ve ever had”.
Jolie has famously been going through a long and arduous legal trial with ex-partner Brad Pitt over their shared winery. However, the legal battle might not be over until 2026, as a Los Angeles Superior Court judge recently ruled against Jolie’s efforts to have the case dismissed.
