Adam Sandler finalising script for highly-anticipated sequel to classic movie

Drew Barrymore has revealed Adam Sandler is in the process of creating a script for a second Happy Gilmore movie.

While Sandler is yet to directly address the intense speculation surrounding the upcoming project, actor Christopher McDonald, who plays Shooter McGavin in the original film, recently let the cat out of the bag. McDonald claimed that he caught up with Sandler earlier this year, who proceeded to show him the “first draft” for a new Happy Gilmore movie.

In the first film, released in 1996, follows the tale of the titular Happy Gilmore as he desperately tries to save his grandmother’s house by scooping the prize money at a golf tournament. After earning a place on the PGA Tour, chaos and hilarity ensue in equal measure.

After McDonald confirmed the sequel is “in the works”, Barrymore has now provided a new update. While Barrymore didn’t appear in Happy Gilmore, she has worked closely with Sandler in The Wedding Singer, 50 First Dates, and Blended, sparking a strong friendship.

Speaking on The Drew Barrymore Show, the actor-turned-host said: “I want it. I need it. And I stayed up last night with my daughter watching Billy Madison. I sent Sandler a video of that, and then he sent me another video back, and I’m waiting to see if he’s confirming about the Happy Gilmore 2 script.”

Later in the programme, Sandler responded to her question and provided Barrymore with a pivotal development. She told the studio audience: “This just in, I have breaking news. I’ll just say this, from my source, that it is in process.”

Barrymore concluded: “There is a process, and that process is in process.”

While, at this stage, Happy Gilmore 2 remains in the early stages, Sandler looks set to make the vision become a reality.

The former Saturday Night Live star is currently riding the crest of a wave, and was recently named as the best-paid actor for 2023, despite none of his movies receiving a traditional theatrical release.

Last year, Sandler earned £57 million. He released three films directly on Netflix, a platform he has been working exclusively with since 2015. In addition to starring in Murder Mystery 2 with Jennifer Aniston and You Are So Not Invited To My Bah-Mitzvah, Sandler also appeared in the animated film, Leo.

When the Happy Gilmore sequel arrives, it will likely be released on Netflix. In 2020, Sandler signed a new four-movie deal with Netflix reported to be worth $275 million, and due to the success of his most-recent projects, the contract will likely be renewed upon expiration.
