The script for Adam Sandler’s cult classic sequel is “in the works”
Decades since the original Happy Gilmore, the first script for its sequel has officially been finalised according to Shooter McGavin actor Christopher McDonald. The movie is set to pick up on the first story following Adam Sandler‘s lovable character, who unconventionally rose up the ranks to become an unlikely golf superstar.
The news was confirmed by actor McDonald, telling Audacy’s 92.3, “I saw Adam [Sandler] about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this,’ I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How about that,’ and he shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2″. Despite an impressive resume, McDonald’s role as Shooter McGavin is perhaps his most widely loved.
The original story follows the tale of the titular Happy Gilmore as he attempts to win a golf tournament to save his grandmother’s house as part of the slapstick comedy caper. As he fights to become the best golfer on the PGA Tour, he has to face off against McGavin’s skills as well as confront his own anger issues, which include getting into violent disagreements with Price is Right host Bob Barker.
Though the script may be finished, McDonald says that he is unsure whether or not they will actually go through with filming it, explaining, “Maybe you should cut that out [of this audio] because I don’t wanna be a liar, but he did show me that, and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!”
The news comes soon after the death of Carl Weathers, the actor known for playing Derek ‘Chubs’ Peterson in the film. Sandler was among the first to pay tribute to Weathers after his passing, reminiscing about how close they were and considering him a true legend out of the many that he has worked with, writing: “A true great man. Great dad. Great actor. Great athlete. So much fun to be around always. Smart as hell. Loyal as hell. Funny as hell.”
Despite the many films that Sandler has made since, Happy Gilmore remains one of his most critically acclaimed performances, which has garnered him a host of devoted fans, ultimately launching his comedy career into the stratosphere. Even though the script is finalised, there is no word on whether original director Denis Dugan will return to direct.
Of course, Sandler has been keeping busy in the film world for the past few years, earning even further critical praise for his role in the Safdie Brothers movie Uncut Gems. As of yet, there has been no word on any production starting on the film.
