A selection of Sydney Sweeney’s favourite books

If there is one actor who looks set to dominate the spotlight for the next few years, it has to be Sydney Sweeney. Through her explosive role in Euphoria to 2023’s Anyone But You, Sweeney has become an icon in her own right. This is perhaps typified by her recent appearance in The Rolling Stones music video ‘Angry’.

In that clip, she cemented her place as the current Hollywood darling. Born before the turn of the millennium in Spokane, Washington, Sweeney has steadily gained recognition for her talent and on-screen presence, but it’s not only her work in front of the camera that has gained attention. Like most actors in the limelight, Sweeney is also a trendsetter, even down to her favourite books.

Sweeney’s breakthrough came with her role as Eden in the critically acclaimed television series The Handmaid’s Tale. Her performance garnered attention for its powerful depth and wrenching emotional resonance. Following this success, she continued to make a mark in the industry with roles in popular shows like Sharp Objects and Euphoria, where she played arguably her most prominent character so far, Cassie Howard. Her portrayal of Cassie showcased her ability to convey complex emotions and contributed to the show’s widespread acclaim.

In addition to her success in television, Sweeney has made notable appearances in movies across the genre spectrum. She starred in the horror-thriller The Voyeurs and played a significant role in the teen drama Every Breath You Take and looks set to continue her meteoric rise. Her filmography reflects a commitment to diverse and challenging roles, which will stand her in good stead.

Beyond her acting prowess, Sweeney has also become a fashion icon, gracing red carpets with her elegant and chic style. Her presence in the entertainment industry has been marked not only by her talent but also by her ability to captivate audiences on and off the screen. This means that her fans are likely to listen when she offers up her preferences, be it for food, wine or even books.

In 2020, she did just that as she took on Marie Claire‘s book recommendation piece, Shelf Portrait, during which Sweeney selected some of her favourite young adult pieces of fiction of all time.

“I love reading, either in my bedroom or sitting outside somewhere,” she confesses as she notes that one of her most read books was The Care & Keeping of You, which teaches young girls about their changing bodies. Sweeney admits she was “obsessed” with it as a child. Elsewhere, though, the selections are befitting the genre with picks from Amy Spalding (We Used to Be Friends) and Christine Riccio’s Again But Better. But there is a particular focus on Jessica Goodman’s They Wish They Were Us, which Sweeney says she is turning into a limited series.
