He grew up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, alongside four siblings, including singer-songwriter Livingston Taylor. Taylor has been married three times, including to singer Carly Simon from 1972 to 1983, with whom he has two children, Ben and Sally Taylor, both musicians. He married Caroline "Kim" Smedvig in 2001, and they have twin sons, Henry and Rufus.
