Yorgos Lanthimos to direct a remake of ‘Save the Green Planet’
Poor Things director Yorgos Lanthimos will be helming a remake of Jang Joon-hwan’s 2003 movie Save The Green Planet.
The filmmaker rose to prominence in Greece with controversial, transgressive movies like Dogtooth before earning widespread Hollywood acclaim with English-language movies such as The Favourite and the Academy Award-nominated Poor Things.
Save The Green Planet will be Lanthimos’ first attempt at remaking a pre-existing film, with shooting set to begin later this year. Little is known about the movie so far, including who will star in it and a potential release date.
The original film was successful in South Korea due to its blend of dark humour and science fiction. However, it grossed just $15,516 in the United States. Thus, Element Pictures is keen to bring the story to a larger audience, and Lanthimos seems like the ideal filmmaker to bring his unique spin on the story.
Ari Aster’s Square Peg and CJ ENM companies will also be co-producing the project.
At the Baftas, Lanthimos’ Poor Things earned five awards, including ‘Best Production Design’, ‘Best Special Visual Effects’ and ‘Best Actress’ for Emma Stone. The filmmaker is currently at the height of his success, and it seems as though he can only go up from here.
In a four-star review of Poor Things, Far Out said, “The heart of it is Emma Stone, playing the pivotal Baxter, and it’s clear that the very fact this movie exists is almost entirely down to the fact that Yorgos and Stone have found in each other a genuinely like-minded collaborator.”
The review continues, “Their work together is fruitful and compelling – reminiscent of a director/actor duo from a more creatively free and classic time of Hollywood, like Shelley Duvall to Robert Altman.”
