Why Sandra Bullock turned down ‘The Matrix’: “It didn’t go anywhere”

The Matrix is a 1990s classic, and love it or hate it, the film has had a huge impact on sci-fi and action cinema since it was released, with everything from its approach to fight sequences to its unique editing techniques becoming common features in Hollywood in its wake.

Keanu Reeves gave one of his most iconic performances as Neo, the secret computer hacker recruited by Laurence Fishburne’s Morpheus to rebel against the artificial reality that they find themselves stuck inside. The role came after the actor had appeared in several critically panned movies that had left him in a precarious place in Hollywood, but luckily, Reeves proved to be perfect for the part. With the sheer commercial success of the film, the actor asserted himself as a titan of the industry once again.

However, it wasn’t always going to be Reeves playing the role. It could’ve been Nicolas Cage, Will Smith, or even Sandra Bullock in the lead. It is interesting to imagine the film gender-reversed, and while this could’ve worked just as well as having a male Neo, the actor simply wasn’t interested enough to sign on.

Bullock had actually appeared alongside Reeves in Speed in 1994, which had helped her to breakthrough into the film industry as an action star. From there, she rose to further prominence with roles in romantic comedies like While You Were Sleeping and the legal drama A Time to Kill, becoming a Hollywood icon.

It’s not hard to imagine Bullock donning a trench coat and embodying the character of Neo, considering her propensity for action films and blockbusters, but the actor turned down the part. In an interview with The Wrap, one of the film’s producers, Lorenzo di Bonaventura, revealed, “We went out to so many people I don’t remember. We were getting desperate. We went to Sandy Bullock and said, ‘We’ll change Neo to a girl.’ Joel Silver and I worked with Sandy on Demolition Man and she was and continues to be a very good friend of mine.”

He added, “It was pretty simple. We sent her the script to see if she was interested in it. And if she was interested in it, we would try to make the change.”

Finding the perfect lead for a film must be a challenge, and The Matrix certainly experienced its fair share of struggles in casting the ideal Neo before Reeves was eventually chosen. “It just wasn’t something for her at the time. So, really, it didn’t go anywhere,” di Bonaventura explained.

Bullock instead went to star in the romantic comedy Forces of Nature in 1999, which was inevitably overtaken by The Matrix at the box office, although the following year, the actor could be seen in one of the most popular movies of 2000, Miss Congeniality. Still, Bullock seems to have regrets about The Matrix, but not due to turning down the role of Neo.

In fact, she was offered the part of Trinity, too, which Carrie Anne Moss accepted. In an interview with Today, Bullock revealed, “There haven’t been any roles that I wanted that I didn’t get, but there was a movie I wish I had done: The Matrix. At the time, it wasn’t cast with Keanu, and I didn’t see myself with the person they wanted. Later, I saw the movie and loved it.”
