“I couldn’t do that”: Jet Li rejected a 2003 role that predicted the future
A mega money-making futuristic blockbuster.
With its mind-bending first instalment in 1999, the Wachowskis’ directional masterpiece, The Matrix franchise, depicts a dystopian future in which the human race is living in a simulated reality. Unbeknownst to these humans, their bodies have been trapped by artificially intelligent entities to be used as a power source.
The blockbusting 1999 introduction to the Matrix universe drew in a strong central cast consisting of Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving, and Joe Pantoliano. The film was praised for its cutting-edge special effects, highlighted by the trailblazing “bullet time” visual effect, which allows a camera shot to progress in slow-motion as the camera appears to move through the scene at a normal speed.
These visual effects allowed the Wachowskis to display the warped reality of their sci-fi universe as the central protagonist, Neo (portrayed by Reeves), manipulates “the matrix” in his fight to liberate the human race.
The first instalment was the pivotal critical success for the franchise, winning all four Academy Awards it was nominated for, Best Visual Effects, Best Film Editing, Best Sound, and Best Sound Editing. After this windfall of accolades, the Wachowskis set to work on The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions, which were released six months apart in 2003 to complete the initial trilogy.
While these later instalments didn’t live up to the high standards of the first, they helped implant The Matrix as a diverse brand and firm feature in popular culture. This expansion came in the form of comic books, video games and animated short films, in which the Wachowskis were heavily involved.
In 2021, the film franchise returned for a fourth instalment, The Matrix Resurrections. The instalment was directed as a solo venture of Lana Wachowski and saw Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Lambert Wilson reprise their roles from the previous films. The film received mixed reviews upon its release, with many critics alluding to a lack of originality as its main shortcoming.
