Why did James Caan quit a movie over a cookie?

Everyone in Hollywood is stepping on eggshells around Silver Linings Playbook director David O’Russell, with a long string of abuse allegations and horrendous on-set stories that make him one of the most openly feared directors in the industry.

People like George Clooney, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence and Lily Tomlin have all spoken about their own war stories after working with the director, with Clooney describing how the director screamed at people all day, kicked an extra to the ground and reduced the script supervisor to tears. The actor confronted O’Russell about his behaviour, to which he allegedly responded by grabbing his throat and head-butted him.

O’Russell denied physically assaulting the actor in a statement, though, saying, “If I ran into him, I’d say, ‘Shut the fuck up, you lying-ass bitch”. As well as this, the director was accused of sexually assaulting his own niece, allegedly threw props at Lily Tomlin while calling her a misogynistic slur, and attacked Christopher Nolan at a party.

However, one particular incident is slightly more entertaining: James Caan quit his 2015 film Accidental Love for one bizarre reason.

Accidental Love has a truly unforgivable premise. It follows a waitress who gets a nail accidentally lodged in her head, which leads her to act in an unpredictable way. She ends up in Washington, D.C., and finds herself in a romance with a young senator. Jake Gyllenhaal, Jessica Biel, James Marsden, and Catherine Keener star in the project.

James Caan, most famous for his roles in The Godfather series, Misery, Dogville, and the festive classic Elf, was originally set to play a US speaker of the house in the film. But what could go wrong with a small part in a David O’Russell movie?

The actor allegedly stormed off set and quit the production entirely after a disagreement with the director over a scene where Caan’s character has to choke to death on a cookie. Apparently, O’Russell told the actor to cough and choke, to which Caan refuted that a person cannot cough and choke at the same time. O’Russell insisted that they shoot the scene both ways, explaining how the choking version would need to be used in the final cut of the film, to which Caan left the set and quit the film entirely.

While this story hasn’t been confirmed by Caan himself, a statement was later released saying that the actor left due to ‘creative differences’. Over the years, many other actors have released similarly cryptic statements about the director, with stories being leaked about O’Russell screaming at actors until they’re reduced to tears, and the actors later dismissing it by saying they were ‘having a bad day’, presumably to protect their careers and not cause any conflict.

Disappointingly, many actors still chose to work on his most recent film, Amsterdam, which was released in 2022. Margot Robbie, Christian Bale, John David Washington and even Taylor Swift chose to collaborate with the director, showing that people in Hollywood will always excuse abusive behaviour as long as they can get a gig out of it, because that’s showbiz folks!
