Which artist has been streamed the most on Spotify?
The evolution of music doesn’t start and stop with music itself; it’s a lot more complicated than that. Recording processes, management techniques, and the way music is distributed have evolved the industry. Some would say that evolution has gone backwards in many ways, as the introduction of streaming services is seen to hinder a lot of artists as opposed to helping them, but regardless of your stance on their usage, there is no doubt that they are now and will remain a pivotal part of music’s creation, distribution and overall consumption.
Spotify was initially launched on April 23rd, 2006. At that time, no matter how ambitious their founders might have been, nobody, including them, would have guessed that the streaming platform would reach the heights it has today. Spotify is no longer just somewhere people can release their music; it is a marketing tool and a vital part of any musician’s roadmap to success.
There are, of course, downsides to the popularisation of streaming services. For instance, artists don’t get paid as much, so it becomes much more difficult for people to make a living solely from music. It can also be difficult for artists to get the recognition they deserve, as many songs by unknown musicians fall between the cracks in the algorithm, never to be heard again.
Of course, there are also a lot of benefits that come with the use of streaming sites. One is that it is much easier for indie artists to get their sound out there, as they do not need to pay thousands to have their music pressed onto wax or a CD. People also argue that it rejuvenated the art of the album. When music originally went digital, and people bought a single for 99p, many artists did away with the album and instead focused on releasing constant singles over time as it was easier to get someone to part ways with 99p than £10. With streaming sites, listener retention became much more critical, so artists started caring more about how they wrote and put together LPs.
Finally, of course, one significant benefit continues to be the driving factor behind the persistent use of streaming sites, which is the convenience of it. People can now listen to their favourite artists for much less money in a way that is much more accessible. People worldwide can listen to various artists, giving musicians the most significant platform they have ever had. This begs the question: who is the most streamed artist on Spotify?
Due to how much of a platform musicians are given with the streaming site, it is difficult not to be aware of them. As such, the top ten artists probably won’t come as a surprise, but the order they’re in might. BTS, Post Malone, and Eminem appear on the platform at numbers ten, nine, and eight. Just above them are Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande and Ed Sheeran. R&B superstar The Weeknd is the fourth most streamed artist on Spotify, while Bad Bunny stands at number three.
The top two are Taylor Swift and Drake, but who has the most streams? Recent data has revealed that pop superstar Swift takes the crown following the re-release of a number of her previous records; her current streaming numbers stand at 73,848,456,741 at the time of writing. Drake is only slightly behind with 73,139,669,580 streams. The top five artists don’t have a lot between them, so this order is subject to change. However, as it stands, there is no denying that Taylor Swift is the current queen of Spotify.
