Wet Leg defeat Oasis to land number one album with ‘Moisturizer’
Indie rockers Wet Leg have officially landed their second number one album with their latest release, Moisturizer, beating the resurgence of Oasis.
The Isle of Wight group, which consists of Rhian Teasdale, Hester Chambers, Henry Holmes, Josh Mobaraki and Ellis Durand, has replicated the success of their eponymous debut, Wet Leg, in 2022.
Their new full-length project also tops the Official Vinyl Albums Chart and the Official Record Store Chart, which has named it the biggest seller of the previous seven days in UK independent record shops.
In the run-up, the band had been aware that they were battling with none other than the returning Britpop brothers for the spot. In a video posted on social media, in reaction to vile comments she had received online, vocalist Teasdale promised fans that she would shave her armpits should they take the top spot.
Reacting to the news on social media, the band posted a photo in which Teasdale can be seen holding a vinyl copy of the album while wearing an Oasis-labelled T-shirt that, instead, had printed Jim Carrey and Robin Williams’ faces. On their Instagram story, they wrote, “Yay, eat shit Oasis hehe.”
The band also played two album release parties in London on July 17th, racing through a 45-minute set that opened with hooky ‘Catch These Fits’, into new fan-favourite ‘Liquidize’ and rounding out with the double punch ‘Mangetout’ and ‘CPR’.
Far Out gave Moisturizer the coveted position of ‘Album of the Week’. In a glowing four-star review, Kelly Scanlon concluded, “There’s a slight restlessness that feels like Wet Leg are constantly moving, or shifting, but not so much that they forget to acknowledge or linger on all the things that make us human. In this instance, there’s no rush to cover it all, but to gaze out like you’re catching all of life’s ambiguities through a train window.”
