Weezer announce ‘Gold Album’, share collaboration with Wednesday
Weezer have announced details of their upcoming self-titled album, set for release on August 21st through Warner/Reprise Records.
In Weezer tradition, the forthcoming release is another self-titled, but due to the gold cover, it’ll take on the title of the Gold Album by fans, just like its predecessors, such as the Teal Album, the Green Album, the Black Album, the White Album, and the Red Album.
Announcing the album on Instagram on June 3rd, Weezer shared with fans, “Plated in what surface instruments call gold. It bears the name Weezer.”
They continued, “Its surface is marked by four symbols believed to represent its creators. The 20th album arrives August 21st.”
To provide a taste of what is to come on August 21st, they’ve also released lead single ‘We Might As Well Be Strangers’ into the world, which sees Wednesday’s Karly Hartzman share vocal duties with Rivers Cuomo.
Production duties have been handled by Klas Åhlund and Kenneth Blume, the latter of which previously worked under the pseudonym of Kenny Beats, producing Geese’s Getting Killed, as well as working extensively with Idles.
Blume stated in press materials that his aim for the album was to create “the most violent Weezer album ever”, which is one hell of a bold ambition.
The press release also promises that the Gold Album features “tongue-in-cheek meta songs about aging as a band, weighing your legacy, still carrying on, with other songs celebrating where they are now: as one of the most influential artists in the world for anyone, any age, picking up a guitar, a bass, or a pair of drumsticks.”
It did appear that a new album was on the way when Weezer unveiled plans for an North American arena tour with The Shins and Silversun Pickups, which will kick off on September 8th in Sacramento.
Then, throughout September and October, they will travel to prominent cities including San Francisco, Portland, Vancouver, Seattle, Denver, Toronto, Boston, Philadelphia, Brooklyn, Nashville, Atlanta, and Tampa.
The extensive arena run will end on October 24th in Los Angeles with a huge show at the Crypto.com Arena.
