Weezer cancel box set release due to expected poor sales
Weezer have cancelled the planned release of their SZNZ box set due to expected poor sales.
In 2022, the band released a series of seasonal EPs following the 2021 LP, Van Weezer. Last year, they announced they would be sharing the SZNZ box set to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the seasonal releases, which comprised Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter.
However, after announcing the plans on social media with the caption “coming soon,” no subsequent details were released. Weezer’s assistant, Karl Kooch, recently addressed the silence, revealing that the plans have been ditched.
Posting an update to the Weezerpedia Discord group, Kooch stated the band did not expect “enough sales to make it work,” explaining, “Ok official word: I just learned the SZNZ box was in fact cancelled, I’m sorry to confirm.”
He added: “Apparently high cost vs. not expecting enough sales to make it work. Feels kinda like the Broadway cancel thing… just letting SZNS be ‘as is’, and enjoy.”
Kooch also reminded fans of the time they cancelled their Broadway residency in 2022 due to low ticket sales. The band planned to play five nights at the Broadway Theatre beginning in September 2022, each of the first four nights seeing them on their new seasonal EPs with the Sunday including an encore.
However, the shows were cancelled due low ticket sales, revealed by singer Rivers Cuomo on the Discord server. He stated: “I just learned that our Broadway shows have been cancelled (due to low ticket sales and unbelievably high expenses.”
He continued: “I’m very sorry to be telling you this now after we’ve already invested so much time, thought, and emotion. Extra apologies to those of you who cleared your schedules and made travel plans to be with us. Thanks to Broadway Producer for all your hard work and great ideas. I loved where we were going and I hope we can find a way to resurrect our vision.”
Despite the recent setback, the band are gearing up for their North American tour later this year to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their debut album, also known as The Blue Album. They have appropriately named the tour ‘Voyage To The Blue Planet’ and will play the LP in full with unspecified “special guests.” They will also be supported by The Flaming Lips and Dinosaur Jr.
While Weezer will be able to play huge venues on anniversary tours celebrating old albums, the same demand does not seemingly extend to their new material with fans voicing their opinions with their wallets.
