Watch the trailer for the new Julio Torres A24 movie ‘Problemista’

The first teaser trailer for Julio Torres‘ directorial debut with A24, Problemista, has arrived.

The feature film was written by the Salvadoran comedian, who also stars in the movie and has a co-production credit. Notably, it made a splash at last year’s SXSW and Outfest LA. Problemista was originally set to be released in the summer of 2023, but it was pushed back due to the strikes, which affected the schedules of many titles.

Problemista will come to select cinemas on March 1st and later receive a general theatrical release on March 22nd. The surrealist comedy is the latest from independent entertainment company A24, one of the most prominent studios that was able to keep working in the midst of the strikes.

Notably, Torres’ work includes the hit American Spanish HBO series Los Espookys, as well as Saturday Night Live – which he worked as a writer on after being drafted in by Fred Armisen – comedy movie Together Together, and the Tonight Show. He also has the stand-up special, My Favourite Shapes.

Problemista features the distinctive form of magical realism that Torres has become known for with his past projects. In the movie, he plays Alejandro, a visionary immigrant working to become a big-time toy designer in New York City. However, bureaucracy, exploitation and the housing crisis all obstruct him in the most comical way possible.

Alongside Torres, Problemista stars Tilda Swinton, Greta Lee, James Scully, Larry Owens, Catalina Saavedra, and Wu-Tang Clan legend RZA. Isabella Rossellini narrates the film. In addition to themes of immigration, white privilege and the politics of the art world, Torres blends in topics of corporate espionage and cryogenics.
