Back in May before the World began to boil, Weezer was caught up in their very own social storm as a petition for the band to cover Toto’s classic ‘Africa’ gained huge momentum. Now Toto has responded in kind and covered Weezer’s very own ‘Hash Pipe’.
The Toto cover came after months of campaigning from Weezer fans who demanded that the band put their spin on ‘Africa’. Weezer’s Rivers Cuomo played a bunch of covers during a solo show in Chicago which came part of a 27-song. Notably, though, a rendition of ‘Africa’ was missing. With disappointment lingering, a 14-year old named Mary started the campaign and opened up a popular Twitter account @WeezerAfrica. Weezer duly obliged and it turned out to be their biggest hit in over a decade
During a performance in Vancouver, the band, famed for their mega-hit and general blessing of rains, Toto took to the stage to pay tribute to Weezer’s 90’s hit. “We figured since we were smoking hash since before they were born, that’s the one we should do,” Steve Lukather says, introducing the performance. “This is our tribute to Weezer, god bless ’em.”
