Watch Phoebe Bridgers give surprise performance of ‘Lost Boys’ on Jimmy Fallon
Phoebe Bridgers made a surprise appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to perform the television debut of her comeback single, ‘Lost Boys’.
It marked a special occasion for both the television host and the performer, as Bridgers was Fallon’s first-ever unannounced musical guest.
“In all the years, we’ve never done a surprise musical guest,” Fallon told his audience. “But tonight, we have one.”
Fans were left guessing until minutes before Bridgers took to the stage in the coveted musical slot, with the only clue being Fallon’s insistence that it was “not Mitch McConnell. I can guarantee you that.”
For her television debut of the whimsical single, Bridgers was backed by a nine-piece band consisting entirely of children ranging in age from eight to 14 years old.
Bridgers used the kids in place of the star-studded line-up on the recorded version of the track, including Julien Baker, Lucy Dacus, and Caroline Shaw on vocals, Alex G on drums and voice memo, Jack Antonoff on electric guitar, synths, drums, and vocoder, Bright Eyes’ Nate Walcott on the trumpet, Chris Thile on mandolin, and Christian Lee Hutson on acoustic guitar.
This marks the first full glimpse the public has had of the new Bridgers era, heralded by several surprise pop-up shows, including a phone-free affair at Madison Square Garden, where she played eight new songs.
‘Lost Boys’ is Bridgers’ first release since the 2022 single ‘Sidelines’, and is taken from the first full-length since the critically acclaimed 2020 album, Punisher
The surprise performance comes exactly a month ahead of her third solo album, Lost Weekend, which will arrive on August 14th via Dead Oceans.
In support of the new project, Bridgers will be heading out on a tour; the star, who is set to soon play arena shows in the UK, US, and Europe, has delineated that every performance be entirely device-free.
