Watch Paul Simon join Harry Styles on ‘Saturday Night Live’

Harry Styles was both host and musical guest on this week’s episode of Saturday Night Live, where Paul Simon made a guest appearance to introduce one of his musical numbers.

Simon is no stranger to the Saturday Night Live set. He has hosted the show four times and has appeared as a musical guest in his own right 13 times.

Simon popped up on the show again on March 14th to introduce Styles’ second musical performance, a rendition of his new track ‘Coming Up Roses’.

Styles performed the heartfelt song, which is the eighth on his new album, Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally, on the piano.

Styles’ first song, ‘Dance No More’ was introduced by actor Ryan Gosling after the Barbie star found his own hosting duties crashed by Styles in the last episode.

Styles has continually referenced Simon and Garfunkel as a key inspiration in his music career. In 2022, he shared that the One Direction song ‘Walking in the Wind’ was directly influenced by Graceland.

“I’m a big Paul Simon fan and I think the inspiration behind it was Graceland, in which the verse was so conversational, informal and it’s like spoken word,” he said at the time. “It’s quite casual and I love that album and when I listen to it I love hearing the influence from that in this song. I really love the song.”

He’s since followed up these comments by admitting new hit ‘Carla’s Song’ is directly inspired by Simon and Garfunkel’s song ‘Kathy’s Song’.

In an interview with Zane Lowe, he added that ‘Carla’s Song’ is directly inspired by a new friend whom he had the pleasure of showing ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’. He said the moment was like “watching someone see in technicolour or discover magic.”

Elsewhere on SNL, Styles’ opening monologue boldly addressed claims that he was “queerbaiting” through his fashion choices. The ‘Aperture’ singer cheekily kissed SNL cast member Ben Marshall as a continuation of the bit.
