Harry Styles addresses queerbaiting claims in ‘Saturday Night Live’ monologue
Harry Styles addressed claims that the star was “queerbaiting” through his fashion choices while hosting this week’s episode of Saturday Night Live.
The British singer-songwriter was hosting the late-night show for the second time on March 15th. During his opening monologue, Styles looked back to a bygone era of his career.
He began, “Back then, people seemed to pay a lot of attention to the clothes I was wearing, and some people accused me of something called ‘queerbaiting’.”
The Grammy-winning artist then joked, “But did it ever occur to you that maybe you don’t know everything about me, Dad!” before caveating the claim with, “I ran it past him, he was fine with it.”
Later in the monologue, the star took to explaining the title of his fourth studio album, Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally.
He shared, “Some people have asked me where I got that title from. And I’ll let you guys be the first to know, I did a prompt on ChatGPT that said, ‘give me the most Italian phrase to ever exist’.”
Styles gestured again to the title as he went on, “What’s better than kissing all the time? Which I don’t actually do, I don’t kiss all the time. I mean, sometimes kissing can be really great, if you’re really good at it and you’re a good person.”
He smirked, “Or, if you have a tight little bum…” SNL cast member Ben Marshall then appeared sheepishly next to the ‘Aperture’ singer, asking for a kiss.
Styles replied, “C’mon, Ben, everyone knows there’s nothing little about that thang. You’re holding a damn wagon back there. Whatever, come here,” before kissing Marshall.
He pulled away to the round of cheers and applause, and joked, “Now that’s queerbaiting!” as he winked at the camera.
Styles also acted as the musical guest on the show; he performed new hits ‘Dance No More’, which was introduced by Ryan Gosling, and ‘Coming Up Roses’, which was introduced by Paul Simon.
