Watch Martin Scorsese’s Super Bowl advert for Squarespace
At this year’s Super Bowl on February 12th, Martin Scorsese followed up on the success of his epic historical drama Killers of the Flower Moon with a science fiction-themed advert that lasted just 30 seconds.
The advert was promoting the website builder Squarespace. In the humorous clip, the director got stuck in traffic in the middle of an alien invasion of planet Earth, yet, everyone featured in it is too busy looking at their phones to even notice the aliens, despite clear evidence of their existence throughout.
The aliens finally get humanity’s attention when they beam a message down to people’s phones that reads, ”Hello Down There”. Scorsese himself looks up and jokingly tells his driver, “I told you to take Broadway; this always happens!”
In a behind-the-scenes video of the advert, Squarespace chief creative officer David Lee explained its inspirations, noting, “One of the most mind-boggling things I’ve seen this year is that there have definitely been UAPs and UFO sightings, but for some odd reason no one seems to be really talking about it.”
He added, “They’ve been trying to get our attention for decades now. But they haven’t been able to legitimize themselves. So we figured, ‘What better way to legitimize an alien race than to hit publish and put out a Squarespace website?”
Scorsese himself stated, “At my age, it’s a stretch finding a directorial debut. When Squarespace first approached me to create a spot, I thought this was my shot. Let’s go big, let’s do something out of this world – space guys building a website.”
Meanwhile, following his nomination in the ‘Best Director’ category for Killers of the Flower Moon, Scorsese has become the living director with the most Academy Award nods.
The record was previously set by Steven Spielberg, who has nine nominations to his name, but Scorsese now has ten after his work on Killers of the Flower Moon was shortlisted at the 96th Oscars, set to take place in Los Angeles on March 10th. Scorsese’s latest movie is also up for ‘Best Picture’.
