Oscars 2024: Martin Scorsese becomes most-nominated living director
Following his nomination in the ‘Best Director’ category for Killers of the Flower Moon, Martin Scorsese has become the living director with the most Academy Award nods.
The record was previously set by Steven Spielberg, who has nine nominations to his name, but Scorsese now has ten after his work on Killers of the Flower Moon was shortlisted at the 96th Oscars, set to take place in Los Angeles on March 10th. Scorsese’s latest movie is also up for ‘Best Picture’.
Despite now being in double figures for nominations, Scorsese only has one victory, which was for 2006’s The Departed. Previous films which have received a not but missed out on the prize include The Wolf of Wall Street, Hugo, The Irishman, Raging Bull and Gangs of New York.
Although Scorsese has more nominations at the Academy Awards than Spielberg, the Killers of the Flower Moon director has one less gong than his peer, who has won for Schindler’s List and Saving Private Ryan.
In the ‘Best Director’ category, Scorsese is up against Oppenheimer’s Christopher Nolan, Poor Things auteur Yorgos Lanthimos, The Zone of Interest‘s Jonathan Glazer and Anatomy of a Fall’s Justin Triet.
Furthermore, Killers of the Flower Moon star Lily Gladstone has made history by becoming the first Native American to be nominated for the ‘Best Actress’ award at the Oscars. She is pitted against Annette Bening for her performance in Nyad, Sandra Huller for Anatomy of a Fall, Carey Mulligan for Maestro and Emma Stone for her effort in Poor Things.
In a four-and-a-half star review of Killers of the Flower Moon, Far Out wrote, “As expected of Scorsese, every shot is perfectly crafted and brings the nature of the true-crime narrative to new cinematic heights.”
The review continued, “At three and a half hours long, Killers of the Flower Moon is utterly captivating, sensitive in its approach and an essential work in chronicling the power that the United States would eventually become.”
