Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross cover David Bowie's 'Life on Mars' for Watchmen

With the first two volumes of their incredibly well-received score of HBO Watchmen, Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor have a lot to live up to on the third installment. The pair have now shared from that Vol. 3 an impeccable cover of David Bowie’s ‘Life on Mars’.

The final act of the release will see the music change direction somewhat. Leaving the moody danger of the first two volumes, this one, judging by the first two releases, will see a more melodic sound come to the fore. The first release, the lounge ballad ‘The Way It Used To Be’, is now being backed up by their instrumental Bowie cover.

The latest episode aired on Sunday and saw the reinterpretation of Bowie’s track find some airtime on HBO. Now the duo have shared the full track which is a hauntingly beautiful addition.

The familiar melody is given a gentle sprinkling of piano until the electronic synthesisers soon take over. The ominous tone builds and the mood swells to a threatening level.

Listen below.

It is of course not the first time the duo have worked with David Bowie. Before the Starman’s passing in 2016, Reznor especially had shared some great times with Bowie. Most notably, performing this amazing cover of ‘Hurt’ with him back in 1995 as Nine Inch Nails opened up his Outside Tour.
