Watch the first trailer for James Cameron’s ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’
The first trailer for the upcoming film Avatar: Fire and Ash has been released. It is the latest instalment in director James Cameron‘s fantasy franchise.
The film is set to follow Na’vi warriors Sully and Neytiri, played by Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña as they fight to survive in their new marine landscape. The blockbuster is also set to star Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Kate Winslet among the lead roles of the ensemble cast.
Avatar: Fire and Ash has been a heavily anticipated project in the making, with its release finally approaching some eight years after it first began production. As the third instalment in the Avatar franchise, it began shooting in 2017 at the same time as its predecessor sequel Avatar: The Way of Water, which was released in 2022.
The movie has been subject to many significant delays both in its production and release, first owing to technology issues that Cameron had to overcome in order to film performance capture scenes while submerged in water, a technique which had never been achieved in cinema before.
Since then, the release of the film has been delayed no less than nine times, after it was originally announced ten years ago, took three years of filming between 2017 and 2020, and was then pushed back various times due to pandemic restrictions followed by the Hollywood writers’ strike in 2023.
Clocking in at a running time of three hours and 12 minutes, Avatar: Fire and Ash will become the longest film of the franchise so far, although this is significantly shorter than the originally rumoured nine-hour length.
Cameron dismissed this speculation by clarifying that the nine-hour run time would encompass Avatar: Fire and Ash with the fourth and fifth instalments of the series. These two films are currently slated for release in 2029 and 2031, respectively.
Avatar: Fire and Ash will be released in cinemas on December 19th, 2025.
