James Cameron provides new update on ‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’
James Cameron has revealed that his third Avatar film, Fire and Ash, will boast an extensive runtime surpassing Avatar: The Way of the Water.
The first Avatar instalment arrived in 2009, although Cameron had come up with the ambitious idea in the early 1990s. Avatar, which became a worldwide phenomenon, took many years of planning, with the filmmaker even creating a whole new language.
Cameron had previously broken records with Titanic, which became the highest-grossing film of all time upon its release in 1997, but with Avatar, he surpassed this feat. The movie has grossed $2.923 billion, and Cameron has since decided to dedicate a large chunk of his career to the franchise, with the final film in the series scheduled for release in 2031.
Avatar: The Way of the Water came in 2022, acting as a direct sequel to the first movie, and it clocked in at over three hours. However, Cameron has now shared that Fire and Ash will be even longer due to the amount of “great ideas” he has come up with.
The filmmaker told Empire that The Way of the Water was “moving like a bullet train, and we weren’t drilling down enough on character. So I said, ‘Guys, we’ve got to split it,’” claiming that “In a nutshell, we had too many great ideas packed into act one of movie 2.”
“Movie 3 will actually be a little bit longer than movie 2,” he revealed. This means that Fire and Ash will be the longest movie in the series so far since the first Avatar movie ran for two hours and 42 minutes.
Avatar: Fire and Ash is scheduled for December 2025, with actors like Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Kate Winslet, and Stephen Lang reprising their roles from the previous movies. David Thewlis will also be joining the cast as a Na’vi character named Peylak.
