The tragic young star Francis Ford Coppola compared to James Dean: “He was a very charismatic, wonderful actor”

In addition to being one of the greatest directors in cinema history, Francis Ford Coppola has displayed a keen eye for talent, with several future superstars making early appearances in one of his features.

The cast of The Outsiders alone included Ralph Macchio, Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe, Matt Dillon, Patrick Swayze, Emilio Estevez, and Diane Lane. The same year’s Rumble Fish featured Mickey Rourke and Laurence Fishburne at the beginning of their careers after the latter had famously lied about his age to land a part in Apocalypse Now.

Al Pacino was a virtual unknown before The Godfather, and The Conversation featured a post-American Graffiti but pre-Star Wars Harrison Ford, so he’s gained a habit for appreciating latent star quality when he sees it. As a result, hearing him compare an actor who may not be too well-known among mainstream audiences to James Dean carries plenty of weight.

The two-time Academy Award-nominated star of East of Eden and Giant only played three leading roles before his life was tragically cut short following an automotive accident, with Dean passing away in September 1955 at the age of only 24. However, his legacy endured for generations, and the actor’s mythology has ensured his position as one of Hollywood’s most iconic stars.

Zbigniew Cybulski may have never set foot in American cinema, but thanks to his effortless screen presence, naturalistic style, and penchant for wearing leather jackets and sunglasses both on and off-camera, it was inevitable that he’d end up being branded as ‘the Polish James Dean’.

He could back it up with his talent, though, and there’s a tragic coincidence in Cybulski making his feature debut in Andrzej Wajda’s A Generation, which hit local screens just eight months before Dean’s death. Much like the epitome of Stateside cool and teenage rebellion, his European counterpart met a similarly early demise.

Cybulski was run over by a speeding train in January 1967 at only 39 years old. When reflecting on the star’s re-teaming with Wajda on Ashes and Diamonds being one of his favourite films, five-time Oscar winner Coppola celebrated “a very charismatic, wonderful actor” who was taken too soon.

“He was like the James Dean of the time, and like James Dean, he died young in a train accident,” he said to Anne Thompson. “It’s always a tragedy when these actors die young, because you wonder what would have been, what would they have given. He was a unique, wonderful actor.”

Still remembered today as one of Poland’s genuine legends of the silver screen, Cybulski may have died far too young, but he still left behind an impressive body of work that continues to capture the attention of cinephiles the world.
