Tom Waits to star alongside Adam Driver and Cate Blanchett in new Jim Jarmusch movie

American director Jim Jarmusch has concluded production on his new movie, Father Mother Sister Brother, starring Tom Waits, Adam Driver and Cate Blanchett.

The upcoming movie, which currently doesn’t have a release date, sees Waits and Jarmusch rekindle their working relationship which has been going strong for almost 40 years. The pair first joined forces in 1986 when Waits was cast in Down By The Law, he’s also appeared in Mystery Train, Coffee and Cigarettes and The Dead Don’t Die. Furthermore, Waits also scored 1991’s Night On Earth for Jarmusch.

In addition to Waits, Blanchett and Driver featuring in Father Mother Sister Brother, other confirmed cast members include Mayim Bialik, Charlotte Rampling, Indya Moore, and Luka Sabbat.

Filming took place in Paris, Dublin and the United States, with Father Mother Sister Brother now entering the post-production phase in New York. The movie has been described as a “triptych”, bringing three separate stories together as part of one larger tale.

The description for the upcoming film reads: “Three separate stories all concern the relationships between adult children, their somewhat distant parent (or parents), and each other. Each of the three parts takes place in the present, and each in a different country.”

It continues: “Father is set in the Northeast U.S., Mother in Dublin, Ireland, and Sister Brother in Paris, France. The film is a series of character studies, quiet, observational and non-judgmental. A comedy, but interwoven with threads of melancholy.”

While specific details about characters in Father Mother Sister Brother remain under wraps, Jarmusch did divulge partial information about the production during an appearance at the Overlook Film Festival in 2023.

The acclaimed director remarked: “The film we’re preparing now for late this year to shoot, probably, I think, may have no music,” he explained. “It’s a very subtle film; it’s very quiet. And I think music could move it too much one way — it’s a funny and sad film, right? It sort of has both woven in. I don’t know if I wanna have music to add some other thing over it. It doesn’t really want it so far.”

Father Mother Sister Brother is set to be the first movie from Jarmusch since The Dead Don’t Die in 2019, which also featured Waits and Driver along with Bill Murray, Danny Glover, Steve Buscemi, Iggy Pop, Austin Butler, Selena Gomez and Chloë Sevigny.
