Tom Cruise in discussions to make sequel for classic movie

Tom Cruise has been a mainstay of cinema for upwards of four decades now and shows no sign of slowing down. In fact, director Doug Liman has recently suggested that a sequel to one of Cruise’s best-loved films might be on the cards.

Back in 2014, Liman released the action sci-fi blockbuster Edge of Tomorrow, featuring Cruise in a starring role. The film managed to stand out against the oversaturated market of action movies being released at the time, finding favour for its unique storyline and excellent performances by Cruise alongside co-star Emily Blunt.

Within Edge of Tomorrow, Cruise plays William Cage, a relatively ordinary man who is forced to battle against invading alien forces while also being trapped in a time loop.

Edge of Tomorrow is a definite highlight within Cruise’s filmography, as well as being a particularly strong example of Liman’s directing style. Of course, as with any mildly successful film released in the 21st century, conversations surrounding a potential sequel have been floating around since the release date of the original in 2014.

Although it has now been a decade since audiences were first exposed to the sci-fi world of Edge of Tomorrow, these sequel discussions are still very prevalent. Adding fuel to the fire of these discussions, director Doug Liman has shared that the idea is not totally off the cards. “We keep talking about it,” he told Empire during a recent interview.

Seemingly, Cruise is not entirely opposed to the idea of an Edge of Tomorrow sequel either. “We love that world,” Liman shared, referring to himself and Cruise. According to the director, the long gap since the release of the original film is not a huge barrier to overcome in terms of producing a sequel either. “I don’t know how long Cameron took with his Terminators,” he said, “but at the time it felt like a long time.”

According to the director, he and Tom Cruise stay in regular contact, and Edge of Tomorrow is a common topic of discussion. “Tom and I just actually rewatched it about two months ago,” Liman recalled because I hadn’t seen it in ten years. I was like, ‘Wow, that is a really good movie.’” With this newfound appreciation for the film, perhaps the long-awaited sequel will finally enter the early stages of production.

At this stage, there are yet to be any concrete plans for a sequel, but the shared ambition of Cruise and Liman is positive. However, it will have to wait as Cruise is currently filming a new Mission Impossible movie, and Top Gun 3 is also in the works by Paramount.
