Todd Haynes to shoot new movie with Joaquin Phoenix in 2024

Todd Haynes is set to work with Joaquin Phoenix on a new project, scheduled to begin shooting this summer.

The upcoming movie has been discussed by Haynes for some time, and is set to tell a love story between two men, one played by Phoenix. As of yet, it’s still to be announced who will be starring alongside him, but it will follow two lovers who ditch California for a new life in Mexico.

According to Deadline, it is a “secretive detective story” which is yet to have a title attached. Haynes’ upcoming movie will be produced by Christine Vachon, who recently worked on Past Lives.

Speaking at Cannes Film Festival, Haynes revealed of the film last May: “There’s another movie I want to do in early 2024. It’s a project that Joaquin Phoenix brought to me, and it’s set in the 1930s.”

“A love story between two men based on an original, very audacious scenario. This is, I believe, his first gay role. I am very excited about this project,” he added.

Meanwhile, while speaking to Variety, he said: “It’s a love story between two men set in the ’30s that has explicit sexual content, or at least it challenges you with the sexual relationship between these two men. One is a Native American character and one is a corrupt cop in LA. They have to flee L.A. ultimately and go to Mexico.”

Haynes’ most recent film was May December, which starred Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore. The project was loosely inspired by the Mary Kay Letourneau case, the woman who was imprisoned for her sexual relationship with a child 22 years her junior.

Vili Fualaau, the victim in the case, recently condemned the film. “I’m still alive and well. If they had reached out to me, we could have worked together on a masterpiece. Instead, they chose to do a ripoff of my original story. I’m offended by the entire project and the lack of respect given to me — who lived through a real story and is still living it,” he said.
