Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter set to release ‘Daaaaaalí!’ soundtrack

Thomas Bangalter, who found fame as one half of the iconic duo Daft Punk, has announced the release of his original score for Daaaaaalí!. The comedy-drama film based around surrealist artist Salvador Dalí is set to be released on February 7th, alongside Bangalter’s soundtrack album.

Premiering at the Venice Film Festival last summer, the film is directed by Quentin Dupieux, who himself has dabbled in electronic music. Dupieux and Bangalter are longtime friends, with the Daft Punk musician making an appearance in his previous film, Reality.

Since the breakup of Daft Punk in 2021, Bangalter has dabbled in creating film scores. In 2022, he released Mythologies, a ballet featuring orchestral compositions by the Parisian musician. The ballet was his first major work since Daft Punk’s dissolution, though he contributed a song for the comedy film En Corps earlier that same year.

Daft Punk were a hugely influential group and vital in developing the house scene in France during the 1990s. Among the numerous smash-hit singles, the duo also worked on the soundtrack for the Disney film Tron: Legacy in 2010. Although the film failed to make a huge impact, though it remains popular among a cult group of fans, the accompanying soundtrack album was a huge success.

With his extensive experience in soundtracking, in addition to his personal relationship with director Quentin Dupieux, fans are looking forward to hearing Bangalter’s efforts for Daaaaaalí!.

Presumably, the hotly anticipated surrealist comedy will allow Bangalter to explore the weirder and more eccentric aspects of his music. Daaaaaalí! will be the thirteenth feature film to be directed by Dupieux, following 2023’s black comedy Yannick. The movie will feature several different actors playing the titular Spanish artist.

Daaaaaalí! premiers in theatres on February 7th, with Bangalter’s soundtrack album arriving the same day via Ed Banger Records.
