The Strokes announce new album ‘Reality Awaits’
Indie rock icons The Strokes have announced the release of their upcoming new album, Reality Awaits.
This is the first official announcement of new music to come from the band since the release of The New Abnormal in 2020. The album news was revealed on the band’s social media page with a photo of a car with the tagline, ‘In The Flesh, It’s Even Sexier’. While there is no word on the actual release date, the band have said that the album will arrive this summer.
This might be the official announcement of music, but the band had also been leaving hints that they were putting out something new with their most recent tour dates. While the band were announced to be headlining Coachella, they also posted various visuals depicting the same retro aesthetic as the car featured in the album announcement.
While earlier visuals of a notepad and a cassette implied that they were hard at work in the studio, fans had also been told to “share something soon” after the band started using SMS for the rollout of their latest project.
Frontman Julian Casablancas said in 2023 that a new album was still a long way off, but producer Rick Rubin spoke about working with the band again after his work on The New Abnormal. With the group settling in Costa Rica to write new songs, Rubin said the sessions were going well and were leading to an incredible recording experience.
The announcement also comes after the band played their first show in the lead-up to their Coachella date. On April 4th, they took the stage at The Warfield in San Francisco, performing alongside Alex Cameron, before they headline the Saturday slot on both April 11th and 18th. Among other indie legends playing alongside them are Interpol, Geese, and the XX.
Since the band had been on hiatus for the past few years, the band members have certainly kept busy. Casablancas had been working with his side project, The Voidz, on a new album, while guitarist Albert Hammond Jr has also been focusing on his solo career, putting out the album Melodies on Hiatus in 2023.
