The role Sandra Bullock was desperate to play: “The one thing I wanted so badly”
There are some roles that actors yearn to play for no reason other than how fun the project sounds to play, accepting it on the pure potential of their professional experience and how enjoyable it will be whether it be Olivia Colman and her role as an evil nun in the strange third instalment to the Paddington series or the cast of The White Lotus, who no doubt were slightly enticed by the promise of filming in a luxury hotel on a tropical island, only to be met with an experience described as a mix of Lord of the Flies and a high school sleepaway camp.
For Sandra Bullock, there was one opportunity she couldn’t resist because of how much she fell for the story, allowing her to forget her desperation at booking a role and simply falling for the character.
Many auditioning actors at the beginning of their career find themselves yearning to book any role, regardless of what it is. When trying to break into an industry as impenetrable as Hollywood, the opportunity to star in a cereal commercial can feel like the role of a lifetime. But for Bullock, her most coveted role was the one to launch her into stardom.
The actor has found success in a myriad of genres throughout her career, starring in sci-fi projects such as Gravity as well as romantic comedies like Two Weeks Notice and The Proposal. However, her breakthrough came with her 1995 film While You Were Sleeping, which subsequently led to roles in films such as A Time To Kill and Practical Magic.
The film follows a woman called Lucy who saves a man from the railway tracks after he is mugged. However, while he recovers in a coma, his family mistake her for his fiancée, and she doesn’t correct him, leading to complications when she falls for his brother, and he suspects she might be lying.
It is a delightfully charming and severely underrated film from the romantic persuasion of the ’90s, with Bullock describing her early thoughts on the role and desire to play Lucy. Bullock explained, “I was an auditioning actor. This was the one thing that came along that I wanted so badly, not as a desperate actor, but just because the story was so sweet. It was the most fun I have ever had on a film. When we got off work, we would all find a local salsa [dancing] place or place to eat. We would slide dance and have Scattergories parties or just do crazy stuff. I go, where did I get the energy? I don’t think I ever slept. Everything about that experience was magical”.
While Bullock was still a fledgling in her Hollywood journey and very much in the throes of trying to book any role she could get, the scatterbrain charm of Lucy and her romantic misunderstanding was enough to overlook her desperation, becoming motivated purely by her love for the script. Perhaps this is the secret ingredient for success, with her passion shining through as the film sparked many greater things.
