The Orb and David Gilmour invite fans to remix their music using AI
The electronic duo The Orb and Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour have invited their fans to create unique remixes of their collaborative material using AI software.
The three musicians joined forces in 2010 to release the album Metallic Spheres. The release was extended in a September 2023 reissue and retitled Metallic Spheres In Colour.
To celebrate the recent release, The Orb and Gilmour have joined Sony to launch the cutting-edge AI project metallicspheres.io, which lets users remix songs from the album at their leisure.
The project was launched on November 28th and enables fans to create personalised remixes or restructure the songs using the various component samples.
The AI technology can also remix the songs based on mood and tempo, and the album artwork can be recreated based on the user’s emotional preferences.
The website’s software was developed by Vermillio, a pioneering generative AI platform that values creator empowerment and content authenticity. The technology they use employs unique text-to-image and image-to-image tools.
Although such applications of AI tech are harmless and potentially inspiring for young musicians, the technological revolution has recently been called into question. Many musicians and listeners have begun campaigning for measures to protect human artists.
Metallic Spheres In Colour was produced by Youth, who previously said about the release: “The idea for Metallic Spheres In Colour, was that Alex Paterson could have done more on the first version, and he didn’t really have the opportunity because we had a philosophy of making the music like the Blade Runner soundtrack meets Wish You Were Here. So, I asked him why don’t we remix it and make it like an Orb classic? And in doing that, it’s almost like a completely different album.”
