The Oasis lyrics Liam Gallagher refuses to sing: “Never sings it live. Ever”

Upon hearing the fact that there’s a certain section of a certain Oasis song that Liam Gallagher refuses to sing, the expectation is that what will ensue is some big, explosive piece of their years-long feud. Perhaps it’s a lyric that mocks the brother or feels too earnest in the wake of their fallout. Maybe he simply thinks it’s a rubbish section, annoying the principal songwriter by desecrating his careful work with every live performance. But in reality, the reasoning is far more ridiculous.

The Gallagher brothers have a long, complex history, as all siblings do by their very nature. But not all siblings are blown up into two of the most famous men in music or two of the most defining and well-known faces in musical history. That level of pressure and exposure is bound to strain any relationship, let alone the ever-complex and life-long connection between brothers. As they’re close in age and share a passion, Oasis was always going to end up as a breeding ground for rivalry.

It can’t even be said that no one expected the scale of a fallout that would eventually happen as Noel Gallagher officially quit the group in 2009. A statement appeared on the website reading, “It is with some sadness and great relief…I quit Oasis tonight. People will write and say what they like, but I simply could not go on working with Liam a day longer,” as he didn’t even attempt to hide the fact that it was the brother’s relationships that ruined the group. No one was shocked. Seeds of the feud had been planted almost since day one, with countless interviews catching pieces of petty fights, several walkouts and even reports of physical violence.

But through all that, the band still put out more than their fair share of anthems. Overwhelmingly, the fighting didn’t seem to find its way into the music. So, while the suggestion that Liam refused to sing some of Noel’s lyrics because of personal issues would be a more than expected one given the climate, it was actually just a plain and simple matter of apparently never bothering to learn them in the first place.

The song is ‘Acquiesce’, and anyone who reads the lyrics will admit that it’s a tongue twister. Noel Gallagher clearly got his rhyming dictionary out for that one, making it a tricky track to wrap your mouth around. Maybe that’s why Liam forever pleaded the fifth or displayed a major case of selective hearing when it comes to the 1995 Some Might Say album track.

“What I’m amazed by is the fact that, you know, the second verse?” Noel said in an interview, quoting the lyrics, “I hope that I can say the things I wish I’d said / To sing my soul to sleep and take me back to bed / Who wants to be alone when we can feel alive instead.” He said, “[Liam] never sings it live. Ever.”

There are a lot of funny Oasis interview moments, but this might be one of the best. In response to his brother’s complaint over the lack, Liam simply responds, “I’ve never heard them before. What words are them?”

“Wait, you wrote another verse?” he continues, with Noel piping in, “There’s another verse that you just refuse to sing.”

“I don’t refuse, man. I’ve never heard it,” the brother claps back. “The geezer who puts the words in front of me has obviously fucked it off,” Liam said, pretending that there was some Oasis teleprompter handing him the lyrics as he added, “I just sing what I read.”

So when it comes to ‘Acquiesce’, Liam Gallagher is living in blissful ignorance. Whether out to just wind his brother up or whether he simply couldn’t be bothered to learn another set of lyrics, he was out to make sure that the track never got heard in its entirety, either through spite or stupidity.
