Watch the first trailer of Martin Scorsese's new film 'The Irishman'

We don’t often get very excited about trailers, on the whole. But, on the whole, most trailers don’t feature Al Pacino, Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci, and even fewer are directed by the elder statesman of gangster flicks, Martin Scorsese. So take a breath and watch the trailer for The Irishman immediately.

The film is a notable movie for a variety of reasons. Firstly, it’s the first film that Robert De Niro and Scorsese will collaborate on since 1995’s acclaimed smash Casino. The film will also be going to Netflix very shortly after it’s cinematic release on September 27th. But, more interestingly, the film also features the actors being de-aged for large chunks of the film.

This is the process where they use computer imagery to reduce the perceived age of the notorious actors. It’s a complex technique that will allow the audience to have not only De Niro, Pacino and Pesci at their prestigious best but with younger faces too. It’s not been without its issues though as the films post-production work has been so long that it has delayed the premiere. It was this delay that in part stopped the film being premiered at Cannes film festival.

Scorsese himself expressed misgivings over the technique. In an interview earlier this year with director Joanna Hogg he said: “Does [the technique] change the eyes at all? If that’s the case, what was in the eyes that I liked? Was it intensity? Was it gravitas? Was it threat? And then how do we get it back? I don’t know.”

With all that said, the trailer has given us chills every single time we’ve viewed it and we’ve viewed it a lot!
