The huge roles Sarah Michelle Gellar turned down for ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’

In the annals of television and film history, Sarah Michelle Gellar stands as a prominent figure, known for her versatile acting prowess and influential roles across various genres. From her breakthrough portrayal in Buffy the Vampire Slayer to her diverse cinematic ventures, Gellar has carved a lasting legacy in the entertainment industry.

Gellar began her acting career at a tender age, showcasing her talent in commercials. Her breakout role came in the early 1990s with the soap opera All My Children, where she portrayed Kendall Hart, garnering critical acclaim for her performance.

However, it was her iconic portrayal of Buffy Summers in the series Buffy the Vampire Slayer that propelled Gellar into international stardom. The series, created by Joss Whedon, became a cultural phenomenon and a significant milestone in her career. Gellar’s embodiment of the strong, witty, and empowered Buffy captivated audiences, earning her widespread recognition and numerous accolades.

At the same time, her dedication to the Slayer also meant that Gellar missed out on a number of intensely high-profile roles and films — including David Fincher’s cult classic Fight Club, along with American Beauty, The Wedding Planner, and Gangs of New York. However, the actor doesn’t regret any decisions. “I also made a great television show,” she told The Guardian. “My mom was a single mother, working just above the poverty line, and I got to travel the world, to see and do things that would never have been afforded to me.”

For almost two decades after filming Buffy, Gellar continued to turn down roles in favour of looking after her family. It was after the death of iconic actor Robin Willians that Gellar realised the value of family. “When we lost Robin, it was this whole reset for me,” she said. “Everything’s going by really fast, and I’m missing it. When I did the pilot for The Crazy Ones, my son was two months old – it was nonstop, and I needed to be at home for a while.”

She added: “Your job may not always be there. You can be surpassed by other people; interests change. When you are mid-to-late 30s in this business, and you look young like I do, you’re not getting the meaty wife or mother roles, because you don’t look old enough – but you’re too old for the ingenue. It’s a weird position to be in.”

However, over the past few years, Gellar has ventured into fresh territories, embarking on entrepreneurial endeavours while maintaining her presence in the entertainment industry. Her imprint as an actor, advocate, and entrepreneur serves as a source of inspiration for many, and her portrayal of the titular role in Buffy remains among the most iconic projects she’s ever undertaken.
