‘Heart Shaped Box’: The final song Kurt Cobain ever played
Nirvana leader Kurt Cobain was the voice of his generation. A genius singer-songwriter who blended infectious pop melodies with the punk ethos, this musical nouse and intriguing character created a palette that resonated with many in Generation X. It meant that after the hit ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ and ensuing album Nevermind arrived, Cobain and the band experienced a level of fame not seen since the days of Beatlemania.
This intensity of the limelight, Cobain’s modest personality, and his heroin addiction have all been attributed to his tragic suicide in April 1994. In the blink of an eye, the leader of an era ceased to exist, ending the short story of Nirvana, a band that seemed to have much more to give. While Cobain had undoubtedly changed the world for the better, things were much worse without his presence, which was always committed to a righteous path.
Accordingly, for those lucky enough to witness Nirvana perform live, the experience ranks as one of the most significant of their lives. This is particularly so for those who happened to be there in Munich, Germany, on March 1st, 1994, for Cobain’s last-ever show. The crowd were watching the physical manifestation of lightning in a bottle, and they didn’t even know it.
That evening, Cobain knocked on the dressing room door of support band Melvins, his longtime friends, despite his famous failure to bring their masterpiece Houdini to life. On other nights, the Nirvana leader had done the same to congratulate them on triumphant sets. However, on this occasion, things had changed, and the dejected Cobain was informing Melvins leader Buzz Obsorne that this was the tour’s final stop. He wanted to quit Nirvana, end his marriage to Hole frontwoman Courtney Love, and return to a happier place.
According to Osborne, Cobain – who was suffering immense mental health issues at the time – told him, “I should just be doing this solo”. The Melvins frontman also solemnly told biographer Charles R. Cross, “In retrospect, he was talking about his entire life”.
Earlier in the tour, Cobain had already informed Nirvana bandmates Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl that he wanted to cancel the run. However, as the group didn’t have insurance, and the tour was scheduled to finish in Dublin on April 8th, this would incur an immense cost. Cobain is reported to have sarcastically enquired after being told this: “So, if somebody died, we’d still have to do the shows?” – a grim point on reflection. As fans know well, Cobain, who seemed to be heavily inferring his desired end, wouldn’t even see April 8th of that year.
It is claimed that during this last show in Munich, Cobain looked like he was done with Nirvana. There was a power cut mid-set, and afterwards, his mood became even gloomier. This was the final straw for him. Following the Bavarian performance, he phoned the group’s booking agent and cancelled the next gig. When the band found themselves in Rome, Italy, he wrote a suicide note and attempted to take his own life by overdosing on painkillers.
Despite wanting to be as far away as possible, Cobain’s last show with Nirvana remains a highly significant moment. As does the set’s final song, ‘Heart Shaped Box’, which effectively brought down the curtain on the career of one of music’s most influential figures. Interestingly, the frontman sounds powerful vocally and on guitar during the In Utero track, a testament to his elemental talent.
